37 – Sonatina for piano solo (in the spirit of Willem Pijper, 1894-1947) (2019)

The work has been written for the occasion of the 10th meeting of the composers’ co-operative “Somextro” on June, 30, 2019 in The Hague. The composition is written in the spirit of one of the most important Dutch composers from the first half of the 20th century, Willem Pijper (1894-1947).
The reference to Pijper especially hints to his formal conciseness and his use of “basic cells” from which the musical structure is built up, rather than to his harmonic idiom, which is often based on bi- or poly- (major/minor)tonality. In place of this, I used a specially developed tonal system based on four 7-tonic modi and five 5-voiced chords (for more details see the Explanation mentioned below).
The Sonatine consists of 3 short, directly linked movements, together forming a classical Sonata Form.
Playing time: ca 3 min.
